Welcome
to the August, 2007 California Animal Shelter Friends, Inc. newsletter.

Thank you for helping us to help abandoned animals throughout California.  Without your support we couldn't continue to rescue sick, injured and newborn animals from animal shelters and veterinary hospitals.

With your continued support through donations, adopting and referring friends to us interested in adopting, we hope to save even more animals this year.

Wilson - puppy strangles
Wilson the Maltese Puppy...saved from euthanasia!

This adorable little Maltese puppy is Wilson.  He was abandoned at an animal shelter with painful, swollen skin lesions and enlarged lymph nodes. Wilson was  held at the shelter for the legal stray hold and then scheduled for euthansia, determined to be unadoptable due to his medical condition.

Shelter employees contacted us at California Animal Shelter Friends and Wilson was rescued from the shelter.  He was diagnosed with a condition seen in some puppies called "Puppy Strangles."  With a few weeks of appropriate care and treatment, puppies with this condition can recover fully with no long-term effects.  Wilson recovered well under veterinary supervision and was adopted to a wonderful family.

For more information on "Puppy Strangles" click here.

There are 2 kinds of mites that cause a condition we commonly refer to as "mange" in dogs.

Scabies is a contagious mite that causes Sarcoptic Mange, Demodex is a non-contagious mite that cause Demodectic Manage.  Many puppies at animal shelters have the non-contagious and treatable Demodex mite.  Diagnosis of this condition is made when a veterinarian performs a skin scraping and sees the mite under a microscope.  Although the condition can cause mild to severe hairloss it is treatable and the majority of puppies with the condition will recover fully with no long-term effects.  Click here for more information on "Demodectic Mange."  The other mite that causes Sarcoptic Mange is also treatable but requires caution to ensure it is not spread to other animals or people during the treatment process.  Click here for more information on "Sarcoptic Mange."

Without your generous donations and the loving homes you provide, we couldn't continue to help these wonderful animals.

Thank you for all that you do to help the animals,
